Thoughts on new viewer?

Post by sledge4 »

What is everyone's initial thoughts of the new viewer? I hate reading the main MB because there are always so many "glass half-full" responses. Nothing is ever quite good enough for the masses.

But I think it is awesome and can be used as a great marketing tool. I've spoken with Mike W. via phone and text over the past few days and there is so much he can still do with the viewer. Essentially I would consider the viewer in "beta" mode.

I still like the old viewer for now, I don;t really like the moving camera angles and if your horse is on the lead it is tough to tell if anyone is coming..............I base this on about 5 minutes of watching 2 races, so if there is some setting that I can change then I apologize

I think there are certainly some changes/additions that can be made, but I think the new viewer is awesome. For right now, what I was doing is following a horse I was pretending was mine, which is great if they are mid-pack or back and then if they made the front, I just switched back to a horse slightly behind in the order to get a better view of the field. I had fun with it. As I said, I think the functionality of viewing the races will be improved and Mike even mentioned they are working toward not having them run in straight lines, which would be awesome. Anyway, it shows a great deal of potential in my view.

There is MUCH more that can be done to adjust the viewer and make it better.

Please give him time to do such things. He rushed it out for everyone, so please be patient going forward.

He told me silks, camera angles, etc can all be adjusted/fixed/added.

I think if he released it with player's respective silks loaded and with the ability to watch the races each individual wanted to instead of defaulting to the Travers, I don't think it would have got such a harsh bashing initially on the message board.

I feel had each simmer had a personalized attachment to what they were watching, it would not have seemed so bad.

I think Mike needs to implement default silks for cpu and new stables, that have the ability to be changed upon signing up, so right from the get go, the new viewer has a personal attachment for all. So every stable must have silks created on the master stable page and those silks default automatically to the viewer upon race loading...no blank white silks ala Cokers ... I really do think personalizing the viewer will blur the other minor imperfections that some on the message board pointed out.

The glory of hindsight, would probably have Mike wishing he did not rush the release as he did, I also find it funny that many who moaned about the time frame of getting the viewer are also the chumps bemoaning it since it's humble release ...

SOME FOLK YA JUST CANNOT PLEASE!!!

:D I think the new viewer is off to a great start! :D I had a lot of fun watching my races and trying different ways to watch. Once the horses get out of the straight line running and get the silks on the jocks (both of which Mike has said are not far off at all) I think it will be a big positive as far as getting new players interested.

It was pretty predictable which players would moan and groan right off the bat but they do that about everything. I got a good laugh at someone complaining about not enough fans in the stands-- nuff said. ;)

As far as future improvements, after watching seventy some races yesterday I really did get tired of the music but I just turned off my sound between races-no big deal. I think that lengths behind is needed also-on the screen and also with the results. It would make it easier to follow your horses position and progress in a race, plus it's fun to watch the numbers shrink as your horse makes a big move.

I totally agree with Ross on how important it is to get the silks on the jocks. It's a lot of fun to see who you are racing against. I used the Coker viewer for years until I couldn't load it and have missed that part of the game very much. (I used to love to compete with the Supers, skull and crossbones silks) The idea of having to get silks when you sign up is a very good one.

I also wanted to say that we are very lucky to have someone like Mike who has stuck with the game all these years, despite the crap that he gets from players at times (including me- ) There are many that would have dumped us long ago. Thanks, Boss!!!

How do you use it? When I click on "Watch this race" I still get the old viewer

here goes Garnet:

click on "all my stables"
click on "accepted entries for the week"
after a race is run (Saturday after noon) there will be a choice next to the race for the old or new viewer-make your selection.
The race will run.
Right now you can do this and watch your last week races--page down.

Also on the bottom of the page there is a link to que all of your races for the week together (very cool)
After you watch a race just click on the top box to go to your next race without having to go back
Hope this helps- Rich

two other tips:

After the gates open you can follow your horse by using the jockey view. Just click on your horses number on the right. You can switch this to any horse during the race. For example if your horse is upfront you might want to click on the second horse to see how far up you are.

After the race the box on top says - Enter next race and click to watch- if you have the que feature on-don't enter the next race-just hit the box and you will go to it. It will show all your races one after another in track number order. Very cool
