**New Contest** NWRC Hold'em

Post by sledge4 »

Ok folks, been thinking about this contest for a while, it was run in the NWRC years back, but I'm bringing it back.

Most people know about Texas Hold'em Poker, well this is NWRC Hold'em Poker.

Here are the rules:

1) Team/Player will consist of one resident who will use 3 NWRC stables.
2) Only NWRC tracks are eligible.
3) Races:
  • a) Owner restricted races with less than 6 horses are NOT eligible.
  • b) Any and All residency sponsored races are eligible regardless of entry's.
4) After each weeks races you post your best "poker" hand. (see winning combinations below). Must be posted by Wednesday 6pm EST (time entries are drawn) the following week or your forfeit any points!!
5) Contest will run 10 weeks and after 6 weeks, the top-4 points earners will advance and square off for 2 weeks, and then we will eliminate the next 2 lowest leaving "heads-up" poker (one on one) for 2 weeks to determine the champ.
6) Prizes:
  • a) Top-2 finishers will receive points earned in credits through entire contest, plus additional 250 for 1st and 100 for 2nd, plus the winner gets a prize horse.
  • b) Finishers outside the top-2 will receive credits in exchange for points earned as well.
Possible "Poker" Hands (these have been modified to fit the game)
40 - Royal Flush (5 wins)
35 - Straight Flush (5 2nd or 5 3rd place finishes)
25 - Flush (5 of the same finishes 4th and on)
20 - Four of a Kind (4 of same finish)
15 - Full House (3 finishes of the same + 2 finishes of the same)
10 - Straight (5 finishes in sequential order)
8 - Three of a Kind (3 of the same finish)
6 - Small Straight (3 finishes in sequential order)
5 - Two Pair (2 finishes of the same + 2 finishes of the same)
2 - One Pair (2 finishes of the same)
1 - High Card (a win, place or show)

As you can see, this contest is for anyone, whether you have a claiming or stakes stable, whether you win a lot or are an also-ran (me  ).

I am looking for some feedback on the possible winning hands, should I add/subtract? Do you feel the values are true to the degree of difficulty? Meaning hardest to accomplish gets most points and it goes down from there?

What does everyone think? How many would play?

Thanks,
Will

And if this is successful, i'm thinking of making a sim-wide version of this with prizes through the roof.

This looks like fun....I have a couple suggestions you can consider. In real poker four of a kind and full house beat a flush and I think the flush as listed above is not really much to be proud of, so here is what I'd do (I've bolded the lines where I changed the point values or what the goal was):

30 - Royal Flush (5 wins)
25 - Straight Flush (5 2nd or 5 3rd place finishes)
20 - Four Aces (4 wins)
15 - Four of a Kind (4 of same finish)
12 - Full House (3 finishes of the same + 2 finishes of the same)
10 - Flush (5 top 3 finishes)
8 - Straight (5 finishes in sequential order)
7 - Three of a Kind (3 of the same finish)
6 - Small Straight (3 finishes in sequential order)
5 - Two Pair (2 finishes of the same + 2 finishes of the same)
2 - One Pair (2 finishes of the same)
1 - High Card (a win, place or show)

I'm in- I would keep the structure as given by Sledge, four of a kind be it 5th, 6th or 10th id harder to get than you might think (based on the last time we ran this).

I do believe that it would be difficult to get 5 of one finish (that was the one I suggested changing, not four).....but to get 5 6th place finishes is pretty useless and lame...so in my view, making the top value "hands" accomplishments you can be proud of makes more sense. Plus, it feels a little wrong to have the hand values (as far as points) not be true to poker. But, alas, this is just one man's opinion.

I will play - what happens if I don't have 5 starters?

I will give it a try...Put I think it will be very hard to get five starters from two stables on a consistant weekly turnaround...

I'm in, but share the concerns about getting 5 starters each week. I'm sure our fearless leader will give us details on how it works....fearless leader????? that's your queue!
